Many believers become so overwhelmed by their failures that, over time, they feel trapped beyond any help. Isaiah wrote of such believers, \u201cO you afflicted one, tossed with tempest, and not comforted\u2026\u201d <\/span>(Isaiah 54:11, NKJV).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Some eventually get mad at God. They grow tired of waiting for him to move, and they cry accusingly, \u201cLord, where were you when I needed you? I cried out for deliverance, but you never answered. I\u2019ve done everything I know how to do, yet I\u2019m still not free. I\u2019m tired of repenting and crying, without ever seeing any change.\u201d Many such believers give up trying and give themselves over to their lust. <\/span><\/p>\n

Others fall into a fog of spiritual apathy. They are convinced that God no longer cares about them. They tell themselves, \u201cThe Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me\u201d <\/span>(Isaiah 49:14).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Still others end up focusing all their attention on their sin, trying to keep themselves in a constant state of conviction. This only causes them to be bewildered, crying, \u201cIf our transgressions and our sins lie upon us, and we pine away in them, how can we then live?\u201d <\/span>(Ezekiel 33:10).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The fact is, feeling conviction is not an end in itself. When we are humbled by guilt and sorrow over our sin, we are not supposed to rest in those feelings. They are meant to drive us to the end of ourselves and to the victory of the cross. <\/span><\/p>\n

After all his weeping and crying out to the Lord, David ended up testifying, \u201cBut there is forgiveness with you, that you may be feared\u201d <\/span>(Psalm 130:4).<\/em> The Holy Spirit began to flood his soul with memories of God\u2019s mercies. He recalled all he had learned of the Father\u2019s forgiving, pardoning nature. Soon, David was rejoicing, reminding himself, \u201cFor you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon you\u201d <\/span>(Psalm 86:5).<\/em><\/p>\n
