It was the Passover season, and Jesus was teaching in the temple. A large crowd gathered to hear him due to his reputation for speaking profound words of love and performing powerful works of God. No sooner had this crowd of commoners gathered, though, than the religious leaders showed up.
While Jesus was teaching, the religious leaders interrupted. “The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst…” (John 8:3, ESV). These leaders saw Jesus as a threat to their authority. He represented a new phenomenon whose teachings exposed their rigid, self-justifying practices; so they asked him whether the woman should be stoned according to the Law. “This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him…” (John 8:6).
The scene unfolds dramatically: “Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, ‘Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.’ And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.’” (John 8:6-11).
What a powerful moment. Not only had Jesus defused a highly charged situation, but he had literally saved a person’s life. Everyone on the scene was transformed by what happened, not just the accused but also the accusers and even the audience.
Jesus used the moment to deliver one of his most famous teachings: “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12).
When we follow Christ, he lifts us out of sin and condemnation, and he gives us the power to walk in the light of a new life. Praise God!
