The founder of World Challenge and Times Square Church, and author of The Cross and the Switchblade—a man whose faithful response to God’s call has transformed countless lives.
His story
From a Pennsylvania Pulpit to Times Square
David Wilkerson was called to New York City in 1958 to minister to gang members and those struggling with addiction—a remarkable story as told in the bestselling book The Cross and the Switchblade. He later founded Teen Challenge and World Challenge, Inc. to meet the spiritual and physical needs of people in crisis.
In 1987, David established Times Square Church. As its founding pastor, he faithfully delivered biblical messages that called believers to righteous living and complete dependence on God. His life was defined by a deep pursuit of Christ and a commitment to serving others.
Through that devotion, God gave David a voice that reached millions and spoke powerfully to his generation. His passion for strengthening believers, equipping leaders, and caring for those in need—including orphans and widows—continues to shape the heart and mission of World Challenge today.
“God’s love is not soft. It is the most confrontational force in the universe — and the most patient.”
